these last few classes we learned more about the renaissance by playing a game. I learned when pianos, pencils, and the lenes for glasses were invented. I also learned what  people ate in the renaissance

Renaissance Interview Reflection

Filed under: home wrok, Social Studies —— maxv @ 8:13 am

Think about class today and reflect on the presentations you listened to. Explain with details and specific information what you learned and what you found interesting about the presentations you heard in class.

I think That the presentations today were pretty well done. I learned a lot about different people.

John Hawkins: He was rich and in the English Navy.

John Calvin: He was a scolar

Baccaccio: He was a diplomat

Copurnicus: He was an astrongamer and  he was  from Poland
What would you change to improve your interview/presentation if you were to do the assignment again?

I think that Tony, Kristian, and I should speak louder so that people don’t have to get close to speakers to hear the interview.

A relative cries upon hearing the news of the missing Kenya Airways plane at Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi

story.737.800.ap.jpg

A Boeing 737-800, similar to the one reported missing by Kenya Airways, takes off on its first flight in 1997 in the U.S.

What is the Issue?

The plane lost contact with the airport after taking off around midnight on Friday, and crashedaround the southern coastal town of Niete. But the crash was further inland, close to the town of Lolodorf, a government spokesman said.

“”The last message was received in Douala after takeoff and thereafter the tower was unable to contact the plane,” Kenya Airways CEO Titus Naikuni said in the Kenyan capital.”

The plane was 6 monthes old and was carrying passangers from 23 different countries.

Who is involved?

  • The passangers and crew
  • the families, because they lost family members

Who is affected and how?

The airlines are affected becuase of the crash they may lose some businness. The government is affected becasue tehy need to use resourse to search for the plane and have an investigations as to why the plane crashed. The families of the passengers and crew memebers are affected beause they have lost family memebers.

What would you do if you were directly involved?

I would do my best to help the families and try to figure out why the plane crashed. I would make sure that they investigate the crash thoroughly and use the information to make planes and flying safer. Crashes in the past have made planes safer because they made stricter laws after investigations.

I am responding to Nina’s blog.

“Blacksburg police officers run from Norris Hall on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., earlier today. The engineering building was one of two sites where the massacre occurred.”

“Injured occupants are carried out of Norris Hall at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.. Shootings in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech resulted in multiple fatalities, police say.”

The students were NOT informed about the first killings, because the head of the school had thougt that the killer, Cho Seung-Hui, had left the capus. The school sent out an e-mail two hours later informing students to stay away from the windows and to alert the police about anythig suspicious. Edmund Henneke, associate Dean of enginering, said they were in the classroom building when they read the e-mail. Ater that they heard gunfire and a SWAT team came in and led them downstairs where the killer had chained the doors shut and put a padalock on them. They escaped through an unlocked constuction area.

Renaissance Person

Mahatma Gandhi is a true renaissance man. He inspired the world with his teachings of civil disobedience and total non-violent resistance of tyranny. In India he is known as the Father of the Nation because he fought for independence. Mahatma Gandhi freed the Indians from the British. Mahatma Gandhi inspired Martin Luther King Jr. to fight for the African-Americans’ independence without using violence. His political and spiritual philosophies have inspired many world leaders, ordinary people, and countries such as Myanmar, South Africa and the USA

Antarctic ice sheets melt and reveal living exotic creatures.

Filed under: Uncategorized —— maxv @ 7:23 pm

Reuters. “Antarctic ice melt reveals exotic creatures” CNN.com. 2:51 p.m. EST, February 25, 2007. http://www.cnn.com/ (February 26, 2007)

Issue: the issue is that at least 15 new species were discovered after a part of the southern polar ice caps collapsed.  The down side? It was caused by Global Warming.

  1. Who is involved?
    1. Scientists, because they will want to study all of the new species of animals(i.e. “blue ice fish, with dorsal fins like ribbed fans and blood that lacks red blood cells”)
  2. Who is affected and how? The whole world is affected because of global warming which caused the callapse of the ice in the first place. In addition, we can learn amazing things from the animals like how to live without oxygen.  In a world where species becomes extinct everyday it is good to discover new species.  We can learn from their adaptations.
  3. What would you do if you were directly involved? I would take the new species and give them to scientists for analysis.
  4. I think the best solution would be to limit the number of scientists allowed on to the peninsula a year.  I would also get laws passed to cut down on factories to prevent more damage from global warming.
  5. In the future, we might lean many things from the fish and animals discoveries but the global warming will take a big toll on us.

Are there people who would risk their lives for something they believe in?

Filed under: Uncategorized —— maxv @ 7:02 pm

Yes, many people would die for what they believe in. Three main groups do this terrorists, naturalists, and civil rights leaders.  Terrorists die for their beliefs because they think that they can get what they want. For example, on July 7, 2005, four suicide terrorist bombers killed 52 people, and injured 700 others in London to get  troop withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan. Some naturalists would die for what they believe in. Dian Fossey was trying to protect the gorillas in
Africa and she was killed by poachers. Civil rights leaders have also been known to die for what they believe in.  Martin Luther King Jr. wanted more rights for the African-Americans in the
U.S.A. He preached non-violence, but he was murdered for what he believed in.

Citation: “Money on the way for flood victims in Java” Money on the way for flood victims in Java, 11 February 2007, http://news.indahnesia.com/item/200702110/money_on_the_way_for_flood_victims_in_java.php>(11 February 2007)

The Death toll from the floods is up to 44 people. €600,000 is being sent to help the flood victims. 30 rubber boats, 2 emergancy kits, 7 tents and 3 mobile water purifyers have been distributed.

I find it ineresting how in a couple of days so much can be done to help an area affected by a natural disaster. I felt that Nina did a very good job at finding information because there was only new information to be found.

What I learned about the Middle Ages.

Filed under: Uncategorized —— maxv @ 8:09 pm

The Middle Ages

During the last 2 classes we Learned about the Plague, and the Vikings.

The Vikings

 http://www.cranston-military-prints.co.uk/ORIG/TWO/dhm_696_small.jpg

http://www.doyle.com.au/images/irelandvikings.jpg

The Vikings were from Norway.  They were Raiders and Pillagers meaning they would steal from a village and then destroyed it. They went as Raiders, but often stayed as settlers. Christopher Columbus Found America. Right? WRONG! It was a group of Vikings.  Columbus was second and took all the credit (SCAM ARTIST!).  The Vikings were good explorers and settled in many places that they went to such as Southern Italy and Russia.  They also settled in Iceland, Greenland, Normandy and the Americas.  They were good traders because they had coins from Rome, Greece and other places in the Mediterranean.

The Plague

http://www.5foldmedia.com/images/black%20death.jpg

The Bubonic Plague more commonly Known as The Black Plague swept across Mideval Europe. It was called the Black Plague because when it infected someone, their skin turned black and blue and they got large boils.  The picture above  shows bodies lying in the street because no one wanted to catch the plague. The plague was spread by rats that came from Mongolia by ship. The plague could kill the populations of entire towns.  Many rural towns were not affected because the rats never traveled too far from the cities.  The plague was a reoccurring disease that came back after a few generations.
